Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is a style of yoga that connects breath and movement to attain balance in the mind and body

Translated from Sanskrit “to place in a special way”, vinyasa yoga orders a deliberate sequence of poses with the breath to achieve a continuous flow. Inhalation is generally connected to upward, open movements, while exhalation is often fastened to downward movements or twists.

This term ‘Vinyasa’ can denote any of the following:

  • The connection between movement and breath;

  • A yoga sequence that exemplifies this movement/breath connection;

  • A class that focuses on this type of yoga; or

  • The act of setting an intention and taking steps to reach it.

The continuous movement of vinyasa yoga represents the fluctuation of all beings and the necessity of accepting change to attain balance and completeness. Practitioners often think of vinyasa as just one of many yoga styles. Others, however, see it as more essential to one's practice. Without it, they feel the individual is merely doing stretches without great health benefits.

On retreat, our morning vinyasa classes will involve a flowing style of movement, taking us from shape to shape in a seamless and joyful way.
